Hey folks...here we go....

In no particular order.

1. Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears - Tell 'em What Your Name Is

Fun, fun, fun. This reminds me of James Brown at his peak. But this is a little tighter and smarter. I cant remember the last album that had the parental advisory notice. Its silly to have it, but intriguing at the same time. I'm Broke is the single but I think every song is masterful. Especially the last which shows me they are probably AMAZING live.

2. Pearl Jam - Backspacer

Disclaimer: I'm a fanboy. I enjoy their music more than anything and it has a personal connection for me. This album is a critical success never mind commercially because the record industry is in shambles. They manage to show the breadth of their abilities and range with this album and its another solid output from the crew. Also, they were the last performance at the Spectrum...EVER. I was there. Best concert ever?

3. Matt & Kim - Grand

Wonderfully upbeat and poppy and driven. I dare you to listen to this duo and not smile. Upbeat hipsterism that excels past its trappings.

4. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion

This is a critical darling which is on the top of TONS of top ten lists. It is not an accessible album at all but if you have patience and time you willl find one of the most experimental, daring and complex albums of the year.

5. Florence and the Machines - Lungs

This might be my favorite. Florence Welch is the artist and the machine is whomever is backing her at that given moment. This music is all her. I really don't know what to say about this album yet as its sweet, aggressive, and I haven't soaked in the entire album as of yet. Here; just listen to the single:

6. Emiliana Torrini -

Ive included my favorite song of the album but this does not indicate the mood and pacing of this terrific offering. Its sullen, moody, bittersweet and swooning. I've shown her on here before and I suggest you listen to the whole album for free on Lala.com

7. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!

Karen O, the lead singer is a darling of most other musicians. The single below is electronic, riot-y, and toe-tapping. Another album she did this year was Karen O and the Kids soundtrack for Where the Wild Things are which is uplifting and unique.

8. Major Lazer - Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do

Weird. Weird. Weird. People wont like this. Noisy. Reggae. Rap. Pornographic. Auditory assault. The videos get even crazier. Included is the most tame.

Amazing.

9. Mistabishi - Drop

An electronic dynamo that drops the thwomp like no other. I hate when people use the word "drop", Like, "My new album drops....". I have been getting into noise as music lately and this guy from England is doing it like none other. He's very unknown. The below is called Printer Jam. Its one of my favorite tracks from this year.

10. Tie - The Dead Weather & Them Crooked Vultures

Albums from two supergroups that sound like the music from the most dynamic artist in the group. If you like the White Stripes or Queens of the Stone Age - and I do - you will be interested in these.

Disappointments - These are artists that I was excited about their releases that kind of fell flat or flatout sucked. Agree or disagree...just sayin'

So we have the upcoming football season looming...in fact the first game was played last night. I wanted to point out something out about the Philadelphia Eagles organization.

Over the last year, they have made bad decision after bad decision compounded by a little bad "luck". After a unlikely run deep into the postseason, the team neglected to hold onto the heart of the team, Brian Dawkins. BDawk was for most fans of my generation, "the" Eagles, due to the fact that our love for the team formed and took place during his long tenure. They took the money they couldn't pay the city's favorite athlete and gave it to Mike Vick. Say what you want about the guys activities and wether he can still play ball or not but many people have had enough of the Eagles.
Jimmy Johnson died. He was the BRAINS of the organization. The blitz package will never be the same.

Now, of course, teams go through ages, and of course the true fans don't fall off the bandwagon. The problem is the Patriots were not the Patriots 20 years ago. Have you been to the stadium? Coldest sports venue I've ever been to. They made me throw out the umbrella I carry with me everywhere(I walk the city everyday). It was a clear night. What am I going to do with an umbrella?!
Compare it to the little place across the street. Citizens Bank Park, where everyone is friendly, the park is bright and cheerful and beautifully designed, plus something called World Champions.

What I am saying with all this is that the end of the best era in Eagles history is about to come to an end. Enjoy.

If you arent watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, you are missing one of the most bombastic hysterical shows ever produced. I was a year behind the guy in high school who created the show, but don't let that make you think I am biased. 20 somethings know about this show. Everyone else above 17 should too. The new series starts in September on FX, I think.

Saw a great film yesterday, The International. It stars Clive Owen(everything he does is great) and Naomi Watts (from King Kong amongst others) about a corrupt bank finagling control of all the war debt of the 3rd world.
It's a direct, easy to follow thriller which is slow to boil and when it does you get one of the finest filmed scenes that I have ever witnessed. Seriously, this movie is worth it just for the Guggenheim rotunda scene.
Clive Owen is superb and muted which the role deserves. Naomi Watts on the other hand is not, unfortunately. She is usually terrific, but here her part seems unnecessary and someone of her chops was not needed so she suffers in the role.
The film is directed by Tom Tykwer, a German who has also made Run Lola Run (one of my absolute favs). While I didn't recognize his direction until his name flashed across the screen at the end, I realized how his normal "flow" of action was present throughout the film glaringly during the action scenes.
Filmed in amazing locales(Turkey, Italy, Germany, New York) with great photography direction, and with great tension during the New York scenes, this is an excellent movie for those looking for an intrigue flick where you are scratching your head for most of it, which I find most usually are.

Bye, Harry Kalas. Kruk's thoughts:

This was a very tough day because we just lost a legend. Losing Harry Kalas isn't just a tough loss for the Philadelphia Phillies organization or for the Phillies' fans. It's a tough loss for sports fans everywhere because Harry transcended Philadelphia and baseball. If you knew about sports, you'd heard about Harry Kalas.

This guy touched so many people with his warmth and his great talent. I've received numerous phone calls from friends who never had the pleasure of meeting Harry, people who knew him only from telecasts. And to a man, every one of them was in tears because they felt as if they'd just lost a member of their family. He was in our homes every day, and the thought of his not being there tomorrow and the day after is almost unbearable. This hits especially close to home for me because I was lucky enough to call Harry a friend. The first time I ever met him was when I was playing for the Padres and we traveled to Philadelphia for a series and some teammates and I met him. I remember being struck by how nice a legend could be. The next time I met him was after I became a Phillie and I really got to talk to him. We did an on-field interview, and it was great because we were able to talk beforehand and I got some insight from this veritable walking baseball encyclopedia. I'll miss those types of talks. I'll miss a lot now that Harry is gone. I'll miss the rides he and I would take when the team would travel to New York to play the Mets and he and I would be driven there in a car and just talk baseball and drink some beers. I could ask him anything baseball-related and he'd know the answer because he had seen so much. He and I played cards together on the plane and hung out together in the offseason, and I never missed an opportunity, even now, to talk to him when I went to the ballpark. Like so many others, I sought him out whenever I went to the old stadium, even after I retired. As sad as I am that I lost such a great friend, I'm glad that he passed away in the only place he probably could ever imagine leaving this world -- in the booth. Harry, I'll miss you, and so will so many others.

It passed a week ago and I just don't get it. I'm pretty Irish myself and the last thing I want to do is drink green beer, receive Green beads or any of that other crap they do. Sorry it's been awhile, folks....little known fact: posting these aren't easy or quick, SO NO COMPLAINING! I will turn this blog right around, mister!

A gripe about a website. Drudge Report. I used to read this site 3 or 4 times a day because of the clean, readable format, the ability to get a right leaning viewpoint on the news and the quickness with which it was updated. Over the course of the inauguration, I noticed SO MANY deliberate lies and obfuscations that I cannot pay attention to that site like I did before. The site listed that it was Obama who flubbed the oath of office when in fact Bush-appointed Chief Justice John Roberts was the one who flubbed it. No correction was made. Also, after the conglomeration of human bodies that attended you would expect trash, lots of it. Well Matt Drudge used that opportunity to point out the trash pictures then, actually solicit more pictures of trash before clean-up was finished. Nice journalistic focus, you bum.

Anyway, that's it for that.

At work we've been down all morning.....ZERO connectivity and I've just been sitting here reading short stories from two books, one a Philip K. Dick collection and the other, a collection of zombie tales by people like Stephen King, Neil Gaiman and Clive Barker.

I've realized that many people don't read AT ALL. Not even the paper(Who reads that anymore anyway?). I suggest you find someone who doesn't and entice them to read short stories. They are quick usually easy to read and may challenge them to read more.

That game last night was AMAZING, and while the Eagles lost at the end after 7(!) lead changes, we can rest safe in the confidence of knowing how good this team is and that we probably saw a preview of a playoff matchup.

Battlestar Galactica

The last, lets say, 3 months, I have been waiting for my cousin, Sal, to watch the past 3 seasons of Battlestar Galactica so we could watch the 4th season together. Thats like 60 some hour long episodes. I didn't think he could do it. He did....amazing. So I watched the last couple of Season 3 episodes with him, and let me tell you, those with time on their hands should start watching the show because it is the best damn show on TV.

Man when it rains in the city it stinks. I walked by a restaurant on the way to work this morning and it, literally, smelled like a pig sty. A real one. I reside in South Jersey where there are pig farms everywhere, so I know the smell. I think at this point the rains are making the smell worse.

I was at a music festival this weekend and it was a blast. It was called Camp Bisco. It was operated by The Disco Biscuits and they performed six times as well as Snoop Dogg and some other electronic/dance/rock acts and DJs. Anyways I'm back.

Have you guys all seen The Dark Knight yet? I think everyone has....I will be going tonight and I can't wait!

There's only so much I can rant, so I've decided I'm also going to try to bring you guys more of the wonderful web.

WOOT, Inc. is a really neat site that offers one electronic/kitschy/weird deal a day, and they really are deals...if one day, like the day of this post, you luckily need two electronic bug catchers. You probably don't. I don't know if anyone but Cub scout troop leaders do.

I have bought several things from this website. A SD card for really cheap. An MP3 player for REALLY cheap. The deal is a lot of these products are refurbished or have minimal blemishes. The great thing is you can check the comments to see wether you should take the plunge or not.

Guest blogging for one of my best friends is a nice treat. In the soon to be infamous words of the dead Heath Ledger and here we go....

Just so we are all clear on the flip-flops so far this year by our beloved presidential nominees. Here is a nice article provided by the BBC. Some of the analysis is a bit idiotic, such as McCain's Christian Right stance and Obama's Campaign Finanace stance, but other good points are revealed like Obama's ever changing stance on Iraq and McCain's immigration stance. Lots of posturing for voters by McCain, while Obama now appears to be readying himself for the old politics of favors for money.

Nest eggs falling in value..
Ugh, let's look at this month's numbers. I've lost money in my retirement account. If I remember correctly, this is supposed to be analyzed on a long term basis and not a short term basis. Anything to make the public grow in fear. I can understand those that are living on that money at the moment, but at that point it isn't retirement you are talking about, it is your current income. Do something about it instead of hoping the government will do something for you.

Kerry in the news again. Won't this guy just let himself leave with some dignity. After his defeat to Bush in 04, he shut up for a while and now here he is talking about McCain in a negative light. This is the same guy who wanted McCain to be his running mate in 04. Another Kerry flip-flop, I vote for the war before I voted against it.

McCain promises to balance the budget. That would be great if he can get the Democrats, who have control of the congress after promising to do the same thing, to go along with it. (Editor's note: Fat chance! I'll love the effort, but mourn the failure.)

This just broke a timetable for Iraq....interesting development.

On a lighter note, check out Hancock, very good movie. Comedy throughout and touching at the same time. Will Smith has delivered another great film.

The Phils appear to have lost out on C.C. Sabathia, which leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Here they are primed for a big playoff run and they are being out done by the Brew crew. Buck up guys, sell the farm, pay the money, sell your soul, bring us a championship. I'm willing to put up with losing seasons for the next few years; I've already been doing it since I can remember.

Pearl Jam Concert

So I was at the Pearl Jam concert last night in Camden.

Let me say this:

I was in a guitar pick hailstorm.

We were 5 rows in front of these tickets and look how much they are going for!

At one point I got the chance to pass an early setlist to the little girl behind me and that was really awesome for me.

I was freakin 15 feet from the entire band.

Mike McCready is one of the greatest guitarists ever.

I agree that taxes stink, but what must stink for Mayor Nutter of Philadelphia is inheriting a budget from that total clod, John Street. I guarantee the budget is an absolute mess and that is why Nutter needs to increase the parking tax by 33%.

Now, I hear McCain wants to cut taxes, if he gets into office. That's pure insanity. We've had 8 years of tax cuts and watching our deficit increase and our economy and the value of our dollar decrease and the cost of gas skyrocket. You think maybe the solution goes beyond tax cuts and "economic stimuli". Dont get me wrong I I cant wait to give my six hundo to Visa to clear my credit card.

Anyway, there's half an argument for ya.

Today, Friday, May 30th through June 2nd, 2008 at 1 N. 15th Street (Dilworth Plaza - City Hall), Amnesty International USA is hosting a nationwide tour of a replica of a Guantanamo cell to educate citizens about human rights abuses associated with this detention facility (the public will be permitted to walk through the cell).

The cell will be open on Friday from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Saturday, May 31st at 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Sunday, June 1st from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and on Monday, June 2nd from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

We are on our last day in Ireland in Dublin, leaving tomorrow. Already saw the Book of Kells this morning.....big flipping whoop. The long room on the same tour is much more impressive. I think we've run out of things to see.

I hope my turtles are still alive.

We are going to a book of names shop soon and well probably relax the rest of the day away in a bar....maybe even try to catch Indiana Jones. Who knows.

This is my first international post!

I am sitting at an internet cafe in Cobh, IE, where the worlds largest boat is docked as we speak. It is also where the Titanic took off from.

So far I have been to Blarney castle, kissed the stone, Jameson Distellary(sp?), bought an Irish tam and seen Cobh. Hopefully I will have more as I can get to internet cafes.....

There really are bars every 2 feet.

The Art of Persuasion

Just about everyday we find ourselves in an argument of some kind, trying to persuade your interlocutor to change their mood, mind, or desire to act. Notice, though, that we argue to achieve agreement and we fight to win. Fighting never persuades, it only inspires aversion or retreat.

We must identify what we want out of the argument. Do we want our spouse to just close the shower curtain when he/she is done showering? Do we want our son or daughter to put on a coat for school? Or do we want our sibling to take the garbage out this week? In scenarios akin to these we must refer back to what we want our audience to do, change their mind, mood, or desire to act. More often than not if we’re dealing with a choice, we want to focus on the future. This is what is called the deliberative argument, by which a wife tries to persuade her husband to go to her parent’s for Thanksgiving. If she explains to him that “we should go to my parent’s this year because we went to yours last year”, she is focusing on the past which logically might make sense but may not be enough to persuade. Instead, if she looks to the future with “we should go to my parent’s because you know how much my parent’s love having you for company”, she has hit what can be the most important factor in persuasion, emotion. Most arguments not only take place in the wrong tense, but are used with a wrong choice of form.

Using the knowledge we have of our audience, we can then choose our weapon (form). For example, if we are trying to convince our young child to wear a coat to school we have our choice of ethos (argument by character), pathos (argument by emotion), or logos (argument by logic).

Ethos- “You have to wear a coat and that’s final”

Pathos- “Look at me off to work shivering in the cold. Don’t I look stupid?”

Logos- “Not only will the coat keep you warm but it’ll keep your skin from chapping. You’ll feel a lot better."

Once we’ve chosen the line of argument that best suits our child, we should transform ourselves into an emotional role model and therefore show our audience how it should feel.

As this is only the silverware for the cake of rhetoric, this advice may help the next time you find yourself trying to persuade. If you’re interested in going a little deeper, I should suggest “Thank You For Arguing” by Jay Heinrichs. An easy read, without all the overwhelming detail. So remember, identify what you want (mood, mind, or act), use the correct tense, and identify with your audience.

Everyone has some sort of advice. With instant information at everyone's fingertips, everyone thinks they are an expert in something or everything. Is it becoming worse than it was? I feel like I always get lots of "You should do this" or "That'll never work, try it this way". But when I do I get nowhere or progress reverses.

Thinking about this I began to wonder if I was committing the same egregious act. Was I sputtering utter nonsense when it wasn't solicited?

I'm gonna pay attention to that over the next couple of days.

Man tonight, I'm not feeling it. I just paid a whole lot of money after JUST getting paid and I feel strapped as hell; it's debilitating. It mostly has to do with the recent loss of direct deposit and a change of jobs, meaning money is trickling in.

I hear from many of people these days about the situation of the world: "This world is already too screwed. Theres no way to fix it, Im just gonna try to enjoy myself while the boat is sinking." This is SUPREMELY troubling to me. I've heard this sentiment more and more over the last 8 years(hmmmmm) and what is so troubling about this is that these are people who know enough to make that assumption. They have paid attention to the world and come to this conclusion. These aren't the people that when you ask, what do you think of the candidate ask you who is running....they know who is running.

To those who speak this way I say don't get placated, get emancipated! Don't quit! Try to change the world instead of sputtering away in it.

Stop acting like a child.

Many of you know I have three turtles. Well, the first one someone bought me then I got the second 2 on my own. They are already officially the oldest pets I have ever had. The first one I got has never grown. He has not grown because he has what is called softshell(leaves them in terrible pain) and he doesn't get to eat because, I found out, the other two bully him for all the food.

Now I think due to this Cooter has been close to deaths door. So I cant stand to just let him die so I took him to the vet. Now this is what I really wanted to tell you about. My roommate was happy I was taking him, but every other person I told laughed at me. My boss, who sucks, laughed to the point where conversation stopped, for like 10 - 15 seconds.

I'm not usually offended but in the time between writing that last paragraph and starting this one my boss came up to me and joked about making turtle soup out of them. Imagine if I came up to you and asked if you were going to make Chinese food out of your sick cat. While I love offensive humor and (i.e.) tasteless Terry Schiavo jokes , I would NEVER tell them to her parents. Not that human= turtle.
